Focus and Scope

UJOP welcomes, reviews, and publishes manuscripts about topics in Psychology and Psychology-related fields. Interdisciplinary research is highly valued and encouraged, but should retain a close connection to Psychology.

Manuscripts may fall into one of three categories with specific submission guidelines for each: Empirical Research, Literature Review, Hot Topics. Preference is given to empirical work.

Empirical Research

UJOP Empirical Research Guidelines

An empirical research article describes a novel study or series of studies that you have performed, which investigates a specific hypothesis or set of hypotheses. In addition to following all Section-Specific Guidelines for Empirical Research, manuscripts must adhere to all General Guidelines.

All articles should be submitted in Word format and double-spaced.

Literature Reviews

UJOP Literature Review Guidelines

A review article consolidates research on a specific topic and presents the bigger picture of what has been accomplished and where this particular field of research is headed. Literature Reviews give readers a broad overview of a topic, a sense of the broader scope of some part of the scientific literature. Literature Reviews also reveal loose ends in the research and provoke interest in new questions to be researched. Literature Reviews do not rehash a particular study or opinion.

In addition to following all Section-Specific Guidelines for Literature Reviews, manuscripts must adhere to all General Guidelines. All articles should be submitted in Word format and double-spaced.

Word limit: 3,000 words (not including title page, abstract, references, figures, or tables)

Hot Topics

UJOP Hot Topics Guidelines

“Hot Topic” articles are similar to lay summaries – written for an audience of non-scientists (i.e., people who do not necessarily aspire to do research and likely are not comfortable reading academic writing). These articles summarize an interesting area of research, an ongoing research debate, or a significant scientific contribution. The goal is to translate scientific concepts into something a lay reader will understand. These articles aim at making scholarly research more accessible and approachable, bringing the general public into the scientific conversation.

In addition to following all Section-Specific Guidelines for Hot Topics, manuscripts must adhere to all General Guidelines. All articles should be submitted in Word format and double-spaced.

Word limit: 1,500 words (not including title, abstract, or references pages)

Peer Review Process

Once uploaded to the Open Journal System, submitted articles will typically go through a three step process from submission to publication: Receive, Review, Revise*. Two reviewers for each manuscript are selected primarily by research interests: one peer reviewer and another expert reviewer. We aim for the entire 3 R's Review Process to be completed within 90 days.

*If a manuscript requires revision, it is the sole responsibility of the author(s) to make the specified changes and resubmit to UJOP within 60 days. Revisions should be made as quickly as possible, as lengthy revision timelines may result in publishing delays. Special permission from the Editor is required for revisions taking longer than 60 days.

Resubmitting Revised Manuscripts

Please resubmit revised manuscripts through the UJOP submission portal. Please review our Tips for Submitting Revised Manuscripts for detailed instructions. Authors typically have 30 days to submit revisions.
