Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Types of Submissions & Guidelines

Book Reviews

  1. Choose a recent book in the field of Early Childhood Education then write a review giving a detailed analysis of the book’s content.
  2. Book review should be in Word format, on 8.5 x 11” paper, having 1 inch margins on all sides, and all pages should be numbered.
  3. Book review should be 5-7 pages, including references. In all cases, reviews will be considered for publication on the basis of the quality of the evaluation and description of the book, relevance and importance of the book to the field.

Dialog from the Field:

  1. A dialog from the field describes innovative practices, reports the practical experience of Head Start staff, or comments on current issues in the fields of developmental psychology, early childhood education, or family development.
  2. Authors are expected to connect their commentary and reports to research in the field and provide critical review of the topics they address.
  3. A brief abstract stating the principal points should be included in your submission. The abstract should be no longer than 150 words.

Research Article

  1. The journal article submission should demonstrate clear thoughts and analyses of the author by choosing words composed in direct, responsible and active syntax.
  2. A brief abstract stating the principal points, overview of findings and recommendations should be included in your submission. The abstract should be no longer than 150 words.
  3. Illustrations/graphics and tables must be properly referenced in the text of the article, and numbered chronologically. Please add them in the same file as the article.
  4. References should be alphabetically listed and cited properly throughout the document. Sources should be properly referenced, indicating the author/s’ name, initials, the title of the source article, journal or book, volume, initial page number and the year of source publication.
  5. Footnotes should be AVOIDED.
  6. Journal submissions for review and publication should be submitted online. Submission of a manuscript is a representation that the paper has not been previously submitted in any publication elsewhere or published in any open literature. It also represents that the author/s have not assigned or transferred copyright for the material.
  7. If the manuscript is accepted, a Word document version should be submitted for copyediting.
  8. Articles should be no more than 30 pages plus references.

Research-to-Practice Summaries (Supplements to research articles submitted after a research article is accepted)

  1. RTP provides practitioners with a summary of the literature review and findings from the research article in a way that is accessible for Head Start practitioners, and provide them with specific tips and suggestions for practice that stem from the study.
  2. Title and running head should be different from the Research Article's.
  3. A brief abstract stating the principal points should be included in your submission. The abstract should be no longer than 150 words.
  4. Research-to-Practice Summaries normally have from 5 to 6 pages when single-spaced (about 1000-2000 words).

Please submit a blinded manuscript, without any details about the authors, and use APA format.

This Agreement (the Agreement) is made by and between __________(“Author(s)”) and "Dialog” (the “Journal”).


Author Agreement

By submitting this research article entitled “_____________” ('article')to (Dialog) published by the J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Author(s) certify that:


I. Warranties:


A.  Author  __________(name)  is legally authorized and possesses full power and authority on behalf of my co-authors [list names] to enter into this Agreement.

B. Author warrants, on behalf of all article authors, that:

a. the article is original, has not been formally published in any other peer-reviewed journal, is not under consideration for publication by any other journal and does not infringe any existing copyright or any other third party rights;

b. The named authors (above) are the sole author(s) of the article. Any co-author not signing this Agreement personally has granted full authority to [named author in I.A.] to enter into this agreement of his/her behalf and to grant the following rights to Dialog set forth below.

c. the article contains nothing that is unlawful, libellous, or which would, if published, constitute a breach of contract.

II.Copyright

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

a. Author(s) shall retain copyright to the article but grant the Journal right of first publication, and the irrevocable right to perpetually disseminate the article as part of the Journal subject to the Creative Commons Attribution License, that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.

b. Beginning one year after the date of formal publication of the article, Authors may enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work and subject to the Creative Commons Attribution License (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), subject to a proper acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal: “This article was originally published in the Dialog (Vol., Issue, Year).”

III. Indemnification.

Author shall indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Journal from any and all claims, liabilities, damages, expenses (including attorneys’ fees and expert costs’, penalties, fees, if any arising from enforcement of this Agreement and/or related to claims of infringement of copyrights or proprietary rights allegedly contained in the Article  , or resulting from a claim of defamation, obscenity, or invasion of privacy based upon or arising out of the publication of the Article or any other breach of warranty as set forth in No. 1.
