Confessions of a Light-Skinned Black Girl: An Academic Misfit
This interpretive biography, presented as an autobiographical performance, is an exploration of myself as a Black female who has come to this work through the power and refuge provided by Black feminist thought and curriculum theory.Â Within this piece I use Taliaferroâ€™s (1998, p. 94) question, â€œWhat is it that we learn about our â€˜selvesâ€™ as we exist in the imagination of othersâ€? I position my 13-year-old self and 28-year-old self in a conversation in which they discuss the moves made to resist the â€œinner eyeâ€ of the dominant world.Â I use the imaginations of others as the sites for where I learned and continue to learn to resist and â€œtalk backâ€ against the â€œinner eyeâ€ of the dominant White society.Â I conclude the paper with an analysis of curriculum theory as a field and discourse that has given me the tools to write myself into existence as a racialized subject.

B. Author warrants, on behalf of all article authors, that:
a. the article is original, has not been formally published in any other peer-reviewed journal, is not under consideration for publication by any other journal and does not infringe any existing copyright or any other third party rights;
b. The named authors (above) are the sole author(s) of the article. Any co-author not signing this Agreement personally has granted full authority to [named author in I.A.] to enter into this agreement of his/her behalf and to grant Â the following rights to Urban Education Research and Policy Annuals set forth below.
c. the article contains nothing that is unlawful, libellous, or which would, if published, constitute a breach of contract.
Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:
a. Author(s) shall retain copyright to the article but Â grant the Journal right of first publication, and the irrevocable right to perpetually disseminate the article as part of the Journal subject to the Creative Commons Attribution License, that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.
b.
